I have the honor and privilege of being personally mentored by John C Maxwell. He is a world renowned speaker, writer and leader in the personal development world.
His specialty is Leadership. He is a leader and he teachers others to lead.
On a recent call with Maxwell, he focused on the topic of belief. I soaked in so much in this hour with Maxwell that I couldn’t turn my mind off. Here’s the thing…For the most part, I think I am pretty good at belief in myself. I am usually pretty confident in my ability to do things. Even if I know I won’t be good at first, I maintain a confidence that I have the ability to get better. I should clarify that this just pertains to SOME things, not all. I am quite certain I could never be a professional football player even with my best efforts.
On second thought… maybe I could… Nah. 😉
But seriously, that’s my point. Even in typing out professional football player quick thoughts ran through my head of what I would need to do and perhaps even if I had started in high school I could have… It’s that power of belief that is deep seeded in my train of thought- no matter how ridiculous the challenge may be.
I am just naïve enough to try.
What is your level of belief in yourself?
Do you find yourself becoming easily discouraged when failure hits? Do you give up easily on projects and ventures because you don’t see the results you thought you should have?
Weight loss is an easy target here. I can only imagine the number of people reading this now who have had big weight loss goals. You may have had a plan and a vision and such a deep thrill for what you knew you would accomplish. Something always happens to steel that vision doesn’t it?
Vacation, sickness, tragedy, job loss, shear boredom or incredible frustration because you KNOW with the 3 hours you just put in at the gym and that salad you have been eating for a week should surly show a 10 pound loss on the scale.
Defeat.
It’s an enemy that sneaks in and steels our passion. It tells us that it’s just not for us. We begin to focus on our one loss and forget all about the seven wins that came before that loss. In fact, that defeat buries us so that we continue to have loses. You see, others can see your feeling of defeat and lack of belief…and who wants to buy into that? So we continue on our destructive path and take people with us along the way.
So how can we increase our belief and how can we help others do the same?
It must start with you. Until you have a deep and sincere belief and confidence, you can’t help others.
- Make personal development a non-negotiable in your life. Read and listen to things that help you to grow and learn.
- Celebrate your wins no matter how small. Turning your focus to the little victories will limit your ability to fall prey to defeat.
- Follow winners! You are the sum total of the top 5 people you spend most of your time with. I will let you think on that a moment.
Once you start having that belief in yourself, you will not only start attracting those who share that same self-belief, but also those who need your encouragement.
Now you get to give this blessing to others!
- Understand that most people want to be successful. They may not show many signs of desiring success but more than likely that is because defeat has beaten their belief down to nothing. Help them by seeing their potential. John Maxwell says to put a 10 on their heads. It’s up to them to change but you can help by showing them you see them as a 10.
- Look for the positive in people. When you see the good in others they will start to see it for themselves. It may take time.
- Help them win. This does not have to be complicated. If they are trying to lose weight, show them how to portion control and give them a list of wholesome foods. If they are trying to get out of debt, show them how to cut back on spending and find extra cash in their budget to dump on debt. If they are trying to find a job, show them how to improve some of the wording on their resume. This doesn’t have to be ground breaking stuff. It’s the little baby steps that compound over time.
This final note is for my team.
You have a gift. I see incredible potential in each coach on my team and I sincerely believe that. I see ALL of you struggle. Some struggle for a moment but quickly find your balance again. Some struggle for a day and the defeat weights so heavy on you that it extends to a week and a month until the moment you give up on yourself, your business and worse – your health.
Never forget why you started this and what the big vision really is.
The bottom line in all we do as a team and as coaches is living healthier lives and helping others do the same. When it gets tough (and it will), reach out to me or reach out to an accountability partner or your coach. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and encourage you. Refocus on your own personal needs for a season and don’t feel bad about that! WE are about helping others succeed in their health and fitness and often in their business. If we don’t have our own belief and confidence in our own abilities to do so, we can’t help them.
So today, I am challenging you to KILL it today!
Nail your workout.
Push harder than you ever have in your life.
Plan your meals and fuel your body for success.
These little victories will translate into huge victories not only for yourself, but for all those you have the privilege of mentoring.
Make it an amazing day!
Rebekah
