“We all come into this world the same: naked, scared, and ignorant. After that grand entrance, the life we end up with is simply an accumulation of the choices we make.” –The Compound Effect
Ever hear of it?
It’s the theory that making little changes each day in your life/routine can make a big impact. Seems so simple right? Then why isn’t everyone doing it?
Darren Hardy, author of The Compound Effect and publisher of Success Magazine is a successful, self-made entrepreneur. He wrote this book with the purpose of outlining the steps you need to be successful. Not just successful at your job or at making money, but being successful at life and anything you take on.
“The Compound Effect is based on the principle that decisions shape your destiny. Little, everyday decisions will either take you to the life you desire or to disaster by default.”
It is literally a step-by-step guide that can teach you how to achieve basically anything you want. I believe in what this book teaches so much, that I gift it to my new coaches. Pretty much every successful person I’ve ever gone to hear speak has succeeded by using some method of the Compound Effect. It’s just a natural way to succeed.
Let’s put it into action, shall we?
I recently offered a one week free trial in my accountability group – Why weren’t you there???
Part of that trial included some Q&A with me where we discussed personal goals that could be achieved during that one week. We are talking simple things like cutting back on soda, drinking more water, increasing exercise, etc. I don’t choose their goals; I let my challengers pick what they want to work on. 9 times out of 10 it has to do with health. We make the goals attainable, I don’t want a new client feeling overwhelmed.
I was quite pleased to get a message from Andrea Frasier, one of my clients shared with me that she was down almost 4 pounds by cutting back on soda. She is down to just one a day. Pretty cool what your body will do when you fuel it properly.
My sister is another example of how the Compound Effect works. She simply added one workout 30 min a day and Shakeology to her life. Nothing else really changed in her food patterns, but those two things helped her to have more energy and sleep better.
Once I read this book, I knew what I had to do. I was determined to send my kids to a Catholic school when we moved to Florida. I had my small business which gave me some extra money, but I knew I could grow it. I narrowed it down to 3 simple things I could do every day that would contribute growing my business.
And you know what, it worked! It’s the little habits that created big success.
It didn’t happen overnight, but here I am 4 years later, partnered with my husband in the ownership of a successfully growing business with a team of coaches who are growing with me. The amount of value I have been able to add to others keeps me going.
It wasn’t easy and I still hit brick walls every now and then, but that usually only happens when I stop following the principles of The Compound Effect. You can’t achieve a level of success and just stop the behavior that got you there and expect the success to remain.
“The truth is, complacency has impacted all great empires including, but not limited to, the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Spanish, Portuguese, France, and English. Why? Because nothing fails like success. Once-dominant empires have failed for this very reason. People get to a certain level of success and get too comfortable. Success that comes easy usually doesn’t last.”
Success that comes that easily usually doesn’t last! If you want something you need to work at it. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results in one day/week/month. If it is worth it, work for it and it will happen.
If you are inspired, pick up this book and read it. It changed my life and I’m sure it will change yours.
