Hey friends! I’m baaaaack. My little blog post last week about Scary Mommy seemed to resonate on both sides of the MLM “debate” so I figured in my follow up I’d stick with the key areas that are tangible and I have personally experienced! I’m fully aware that this is not an industry for everyone. I’m going to be super transparent about my experience! We all might not agree, but I can tell you these little nuggets of hard fought for wisdom, are true for me, my team, and thousands of others!
Remember, not one person’s story is the same. I can promise you this hasn’t been all rainbows and unicorns over here. Have you ever read this stinky little post about #2? Yeah, I’m telling ya, I keep it real.
Now, on to the post!
Seven KEY MLM Truth Bombs of Success
Future Income: We can’t all be the #1 person in a company even in regular business models. So, we should assume that handwork, commitment and all the other things that work in regular business models, also are true here in MLM land. MLM CAN and WILL generate an income for your future. It may help pay off some debt or go to pay your grocery bill. Some will grow it to something much larger that meets or exceeds your current full time income.
MLM Truth: Not everyone will be in the Top 10… but it is possible with the right support, team and company. I think that’s the part most people don’t like to admit. You gotta work it for your WHY…and stop worrying about what everyone else is doing.
Expanded Freedom: Like with anything, driven people will work harder and do more until the success starts to flow. Many will start their own businesses and never experience freedom because there is always that nagging drive to do more and be more. I have a good friend who spends her time traveling the world and writing because of the freedom she has created. She works hard, but she plays hard too and she decides when the work starts and ends.
MLM Truth: Personally, I work 20 hours a week MAX. With 5 small children at home it’s all I can or want to do. 🙂
Valuable Relationships: This business is all about relationships, making connections and caring more about the needs of others than your own needs. THIS is where most people go wrong. We end up chasing a ranking or title or a shiny new car and we get all the people we can to sign up…not because they really need it or could benefit from it, but because it helps us get to the next level of our own personal gain.
MLM Truth: I’m sorry if you have been the victim of this kind of behavior. I’m sorry if you have been sucked into growing your business this way. I have come a long way and learned a lot in my 6 years of business — quality relationships take time and I’m certain this is the secret sauce.
Companys Count: Not all companies or products are created equal. Some are built on integrity and a true desire to create a positive change in the world with their product. I know, that sounds so syrupy sweet, right? But leadership flows from the top!
MLM Truth: Be mindful to watch what’s happening, not just what’s being said to sell you. You have to be willing to do the research and the soul searching!
Things to consider BEFORE starting an online business via multilevel marketing
Know the Product: Do you even know what the product is and do you like it? I have had people sell me on a business before I even had a clue as to what the product was. Even after doing internet searches, I still found mostly videos pushing me to become a distributor. If you want to be successful in a business, you need to believe in the product.
MLM Truth: If you don’t use it and don’t believe in it, no one else will either.
Do you care about people: Truly? Don’t try to fool yourself here! One of my favorite quotes is from Zig Ziglar who says when you help others get what they want; you will always get what you want. That doesn’t mean you do things for people in the hopes that you get something. It means you give without expecting anything in return. Most people who are successful in growing a business are successful because people genuinely like them. I keep going back to Allen’s Automotive because they are the nicest people I have ever encountered in a car repair shop. They aren’t the closest to my house and I don’t even know if they are the cheapest. I don’t really care. I like how they treat me and I know they are honest.
MLM Truth: That is what business is. Period. Exclamation Point!
Thick Skin is Required: Do you care what other people say and think? I’m not talking about the good and wise people looking out for you. I’m talking about the negative trolls who always have something terrible to say. Do you care what Scary Mommy is saying? Do her blogs make you scared to start a business because you don’t want to be the butt of her next joke?
There will always be someone there to tell you that you can’t. There will always be someone to tell you the idea is dumb. I had someone in my family tell me that my new business was silly and no one made any money doing that kind of business. I was silent. But those words were some of the most powerful tools that set my determination on fire. Stop caring what others say. Love people and work hard. If that means you are building your dreams through multi level marketing… then honey… build on!
MLM Truth: In the end, you are selling you!
One of the biggest fears I hear from every single person that joins my teams is that they don’t want to be pushy. My response is always: “I don’t want you to be pushy either!” If you care enough to be conscious of that, I don’t think you ever will be. When your intentions are right, people will see that and they will love you.
They still may not buy your product or join your team and that’s okay. The mission is to love people first. The rest will all fall into place. I’m pretty sure Jesus taught that message. Go figure! I hope that if you come across a business that truly excites you, that you go for it!
Be wise and seek advice but don’t let fear or the negativity of naysayers keep you from doing what you love. People can be nasty. Don’t let them have a say over your life.
