Ever read Scary Mommy’s blog? I love good humor. I consider myself to be pretty funny actually. Most of the things I post tend to be a bit tongue-in-cheek. I always read, re-read and have my content edited in an effort to be as inoffensive as possible. I don’t shy away from stating how I feel, but I believe there is a tactful way to share who you are without belittling others. Call me crazy, but social media doesn’t tend to lend itself to tack these days.
Many of you may know who Scary Mommy is. She is a fellow blogger and for years I have read her stuff and laughed my butt off.  I always thought we would be good friends. When I started reading her blogs she would make jabs at multi level marketers and I laughed… because let’s be honest, some people have some serious horrible copy and paste scripts they spam us with. In this industry, I have made my fair share of mistakes.
Though I find many of the articles Scary Mommy writes to be humorous and often true, lately she has been taking it too far and started to share content about MLM that bashes other moms for doing exactly what she herself is doing…taking something she believes in and using the internet to generate an income from it.
Here’s why I think Scary Mommy’s content is a bit off course…
A little over 6 years ago I found a product that legitimately changed my life. For real. No sales pitch in this statement. It truly created a shift for me. The product that helped me may not be the product for you and I fully understand this. I speak for myself and for the thousands of others I have encountered who feel the same. I started using this product and became a lifelong user, not because of the money I made but because it helped me mentally, physically and emotionally. Â Not gonna lie, the income was a nice little bonus and I proudly used it to pay off debt, put my kids in private school and have a lot more dates with my husband. Â My entire family uses it (yes, even my kids.) Because of the results I got, many would ask me what it was I did and how, after 5 kids, was I able to stay in such good shape and maintain healthy habits. Â And from these conversations, sometimes I would gain a new customer.
My point is simple….
There are a lot of successful people who have built amazing businesses with network marketing. It is a brilliant way to grow an income when done properly. Success in anything is about the relationships we form. Where things start to go south for multi-level marketers is that literally anyone can start an online business and so there will always be people who are well-meaning in their horrible sales pitches, but they just are terrible at communication with other human beings. Â The intentions are good, but the delivery is just downright embarrassing.
I know because I’ve sent the terrible messages. I have had the awkward face-to-face conversations.  I have also been on the receiving end of those messages. We all have to do and say some stupid stuff before we learn how to be better.
Since I’ve become a little long-winded in this post, I wanted to split it into two parts. Let’s all laugh a little, learn a little, and understand we’re all just trying to do our best.
Whatever it is that you do online for your business, make sure you outwork everyone – in research, in sales, in relationship building and in modeling your product to the best of your ability. If someone can do it better than me, I know I’ve still got work to do. And….I’ve got lots of work to do!
In my next blog, I’ll share 6 reasons MLM can be GOOD when done properly. No scams. No sales pitch. Simple, key ideas I’ve learned over the last 6 years.
Stay tuned 🙂 Follow me here so you’re updated when I post!
