Totally not referring to the poor fitting jeans I may or may not still wear that show a little too much… I digress.
“Mom cracks” is a term that my good friend and fellow coach used on a recent call. She has 2 kids, I have 5 and we are both dedicated to our business and our family- more so our family. We are driven business women but totally not willing to sacrifice the moments with our husband and kids for the sake of an extra sale. I have not worked a 40 hour week since becoming a coach. I am not even sure I would know how to fit 40 hours of work into my day. Though I have time that I specifically set aside to work my business, with a 2 year old and a 5 month old… let’s just say they don’t really give a crap about what is on my calendar. I’m lucky to fit a full 20 hours a week for my business development. So how does it all get done?
The Mom Cracks!
Okay, let’s back up a second. First of all, it’s NEVER all gets done. I may wear a cape but it still gets spit up on it and occasionally is ripped off by an angry 2-year-old. When the cape gets ripped off my back, I’m just a naked and afraid mom wondering where I will find time to even take a shower. This is where Mom Cracks come to the rescue.
Mom Cracks: those slivers of time in your day when you get crap done
You may want to lie down on the floor and nap, but you don’t because you are a mom on a mission and you have a dream to fulfill. Mom cracks may happen moments after you lay the baby down to nap and just before your other kid poops in his underwear. Trust me, those glorious 10 minutes can pack a punch if you are intentional. The key word here is INTENTIONAL! You thought I was going to say Mom Crack didn’t you? I do kind of like saying it. Watch – you’re going to catch yourself frequently blurting out “Mom Crack” in your conversations and you will think of me. You’re welcome 🙂
So here is how you are going to maximize the use of your Mom Cracks
- Have a plan! If you want to get stuff done, you need to have a plan. Each night I plan my next day. I don’t care when you do it. Maybe it’s first thing in the morning. But you want to have a visual of what needs to get done. So as soon as you find yourself standing there thinking “I know I should be doing something right now” you grab that plan and you get moving.
- Number your list according to priority. If you know what needs to be done first (even if it is the last thing you want to do) get it done! If you have ever read the book by Brian Tracy called Eat That Frog then you know what I mean. Do the thing on your list that will have the greatest impact on your day FIRST! Man that feels good!
- Don’t Freak Out! It’s fine if you don’t finish what you got started on. You have that list to jog your memory. Look, when you have a lot going on and you are trying to multitask, sometimes things slide through the CRACKS. Just keep coming back with focus. You will get there. You only lose when you stop trying.
- Track your day. Do you ever get to the end of your day and feel like you accomplished nothing. Some days, that may be the case. But I am willing to bet that if you are intentional and make a list, you actually accomplish far more than you give yourself credit for. Maybe the list isn’t completely checked off, but things got done. So make a list of what you really did achieve and give yourself a pat on the back because you didn’t waste time today! Good job!
